Since the Dobbs Decision, Overall Abortion Numbers Have Increased Even for States Where Pro-Life Bans Went Into Effect

On October 16, 2024 the Foundation to Abolish Abortion (FAA) released the latest Babies Unprotected report.

FAA finds that Pro-Life laws banning clinics and doctors from performing abortions are not reducing overall abortion numbers.

While many Pro-Life leaders claim that some states are “abortion-free” and that tens or hundreds of thousands of lives have been saved by post-Roe abortion bans, the reality is that more babies from these states are being aborted now than were in 2019 before any of the Pro-Life “bans” went into effect.

Key findings in this report include:

  • Pro-Life laws are not reducing the overall numbers of abortions. A factor contributing heavily to this is that Self-Induced Abortion remains legal in all 50 states due to the complete legal immunity from prosecution that Pro-Life laws give to women who induce their own abortions.

  • At least 217,834 women from “ban” states will procure abortions in 2024, an increase of 36,631 from 2019 overall numbers. Even if current rates stop climbing, the overall number of abortions procured by women from “ban” states will be at least 36,631 higher in 2024 than it was in 2019 before any General Bans or 6-Week Bans went into effect.

  • At least 71,100 Telehealth Abortions will be procured under shield laws in 2024. Based on Jan.-Mar. 2024 data, at least 71,100 Telehealth Abortions provided under shield laws will be completed in 2024 inside states with General Bans or 6-Week Bans in effect.

  • Self-Managed Abortions remain difficult to count. Based on July-Aug. 2022 data, at least 62,077 Self-Managed Abortions were still occurring per year inside states that had General Bans or 6-Week Bans in effect.

  • 2024 data: In addition to 2022 data reviewed in our previous report, this report analyzes data from the study period of January through March 2024. During that time, 14 states had General Bans (often called “total bans”) and two states had 6-Week Bans (often referred to as heartbeat bills).

These findings confirm that since preborn babies are not provided the equal protection of the laws, they remain essentially unprotected in all of the 50 states.

The Foundation to Abolish Abortion works to exalt and vindicate the image of God by promoting sound public policy that provides all preborn human beings the equal protection of the laws. In support of that mission, FAA drafts and analyzes legislation, conducts research, publishes presentations, produces other educational media, and consults with public officials, organizations, and abolitionist advocates.
