Students for Life Blames Deevers for Their Failed Bill
Students for Life Action, the lobbying arm of the national Pro-Life establishment group Students for Life, recently accused Oklahoma Republican State Senator Dusty Deevers of killing their toothless chemical abortion trafficking bill merely for offering an amendment to fix the legislation.
The proposal from Students for Life Action claimed to ban the trafficking of abortion pills, yet entirely failed to prosecute the conduct of ordering abortion pills in any meaningful sense.
As shown in an analysis from Abolish Abortion Oklahoma, the bill would neither apply any enforceable penalties to out-of-state abortion activists shipping abortion pills into Oklahoma, because they are protected by shield laws in their own states, nor to mail carriers, because they are ignorant of the contents of packages they deliver.
Oklahoma can only reliably prosecute anyone in their state who willfully chooses to procure abortion pills in order to murder a preborn baby, yet the bill failed to enable such prosecutions, making the legislation nothing but a symbolic gesture against abortion pills.
Deevers Offers an Amendment
Deevers merely offered an amendment ensuring that “a person shall not perform or procure an abortion” by applying existing criminal law to deter the willful murder of innocent preborn babies.
Rather than thanking him for seeking to improve the legislation and protect preborn babies under the law, Students for Life Action dismissed the Deevers amendment as “misguided,” revealing that Students for Life Action remains uninterested in actually abolishing abortion.
Deevers was not responsible for killing the chemical abortion bill. Republican leaders in the Oklahoma Senate were responsible for killing the bill. Students for Life Action even admitted that the amendment was “used as an excuse” as to why “Senate leadership has not brought the bill to the floor,” clearing Deevers even as they tried to mount their accusations.
The amendment from Deevers was ultimately not added to the bill, meaning that Senate leadership refused to advance even the toothless original version of the chemical abortion bill for a floor vote, another reality that was explicitly admitted by Students for Life Action.
In other words, leadership in the Oklahoma Senate was responsible for killing the bill, a fact that is acknowledged by both supporters and skeptics of the legislation. The mere act of offering an amendment to a bill does not kill that bill, and if Students for Life Action did not want lawmakers to offer amendments to their bill, they should not have written a bill that needed to be amended.
Students for Life Opposes Abolishing Abortion
Students for Life Action has actively subverted abolition bills on a number of occasions, and are indeed leading opponents of equal protection for preborn babies. They claim to want an end to abortion, yet they prove to be consistent opponents of bills to end abortion.
Students for Life Action shamefully misrepresented Deevers and others who want abortion abolished. Though abolitionists simply believe murdering anyone should be illegal for everyone, Students for Life Action claimed that they have an “obsession with prosecuting women rather than abortionists or even the men who also played a role.”
Nothing could be further from the truth. The abolitionists want anyone who willfully murders a preborn baby to face penalties for that murder, whether they happen to be the father of the baby, the mother of the baby, or a third-party abortionist, as always made clear in the legislation submitted by abolitionists.
Students for Life Action and other Pro-Life establishment groups, on the other hand, are the ones with an “obsession” for keeping abortion legal for women, consistently writing such provisions into their bills, thereby preventing the abolition of abortion.
Oklahoma Christians Want to Pass Equal Protection
Christians in the state of Oklahoma want to treat preborn babies like the image-bearers of God they truly are, protecting their lives with the exact same homicide laws that already protect image-bearers of God who have been born.
That is why delegates of the Oklahoma Republican Party moved in overwhelming fashion last month to censure four Republican members of the Oklahoma Senate who voted against an abolition bill authored by Deevers.
Students for Life Action may think they can blatantly lie about Deevers and other abolitionists, but anti-abortion Christians have become tired of toothless gestures against abortion that fail to establish equal protection of the laws for preborn babies.
By seeking to blame Deevers for the failure of their chemical abortion bill, Students for Life Action has instead revealed their own inconsistencies and their own disconnect from the widespread desire to truly abolish abortion.
