LifeNews Lies

In the years since Roe v. Wade was overturned, overall abortion numbers across the country have increased. This is even true of states which claim to have completely banned abortion within their borders.

That is a fact that every anti-abortion Christian should know, but many do not know this, largely because conservative organizations and news outlets are not talking about this sad reality.

Pro-Life media outlet LifeNews in particular is not only failing to report the reality of self-induced abortions still happening in so-called ban states, but they are also publishing deeply misleading headlines about abortions dropping down to zero in these states.

Even the most well-intentioned anti-abortion Christian who follows the battle against abortion through LifeNews will remain unaware of how Pro-Life laws are failing to protect preborn children in these states.

With nearly 940,000 followers on Facebook, more than 370,000 followers on X, and almost 30,000 followers on Instagram, LifeNews reaches hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of anti-abortion Christians and conservatives as they report on abortion across the country.

While they say that they work to “bring pro-life news to the pro-life community” and insist they have “a reputation for fairness, accuracy, and timeliness,” they routinely make false claims.

When confronted about the inaccuracy of their reporting, they often react by blocking those who ask questions on social media rather than retracting inaccurate statements, and they have refused overtures from other anti-abortion groups and leaders to fix their reporting.

False Reports of Zero Abortions

Many headlines from LifeNews claim that states where Pro-Life regulations went into effect now have zero abortions.

They usually point to state government health data releases to support their claims. They regularly insist that the lives of hundreds or even thousands of preborn babies are saved by Pro-Life regulations, without sufficiently clarifying that the state data only consider abortions in the formal medical system.

One article from June 2025 was entitled “Texas Records 30 Straight Months of 0 Elective Abortions” and claimed that “reported elective abortions have remained at zero each month since the Human Life Protection Act took effect.” Another article from March 2025 was called “Texas Abortions Drop to 0, Law Saves Women and Babies,” while a third article from January 2025 was entitled “Texas Abortions Drop to 0, Saving Up Thousands of Babies Per Month.”

The articles were each attributed to Texas Alliance for Life, a leading Pro-Life establishment group in Texas which has a long record of opposing legislation that would provide the equal protection of the laws to preborn babies in their state.

None of the articles clarified that self-induced abortions are still legal in Texas and continue to happen on Texas soil by means of abortion pills, nor do they point out that tens of thousands of mothers are traveling to other states for clinic-based abortions. This means that the state government data, which did show a substantial decline in the number of abortions happening, was only telling part of the story since only abortions happening through the formal medical system are reported to the state.

Our analysis of self-induced abortion numbers still happening in so-called ban states is based primarily on data from the Guttmacher Institute and the Society of Family Planning. We found that a conservative estimate indicates there were over 25,000 babies murdered in Texas in 2024 through self-induced abortions with mail-order abortion pills, as well as almost 35,000 abortions of Texas babies by women traveling outside the state to murder their children.

That means at least 60,000 Texas preborn babies were murdered in 2024. This figure outpaces the 59,000 murdered preborn babies in Texas recorded back in 2019.

Misleading Headlines Across the Country

Beyond the state of Texas, many other LifeNews headlines make the same claims about abortion in similar states, implying that abortion has virtually ended in much of the country.

LifeNews has published such headlines for years. Back in December 2022, the media outlet released an article called “Kentucky Abortions Drop to 0, Abortion Ban Saves Hundreds of Babies,” asserting that “abortions have dropped from hundreds per month to 0 since the August enforcement of the trigger law passed before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.”

Yet another article released in August 2023 was called “South Dakota Abortions Drop to 0 as Abortion Ban Saves Hundreds of Babies,” while a third article from the same month was called “Oklahoma Abortions Drop to 0 as Abortion Ban Saves Thousands of Babies.”

More recent headlines make similar claims. One article from June 2025 was entitled “Indiana Reports Just 22 Abortions as Abortion Ban Saves Babies,” while an article from the same month was called “Arkansas Goes From 3,200 Abortions Per Year to 0 as Abortion Ban Saves Babies.”

LifeNews continues to publish these claims even as self-induced abortions contribute to worsening abortion levels across the country. As detailed in our analysis, there were over 217,000 abortions by residents of states with so-called abortion bans in 2024, an increase from 181,000 abortions in 2019, which was before the overturn of Roe v. Wade and prior to heartbeat legislation entering into effect in any state.

Rather than repenting of these false assertions, or at least providing ample warning that state government health data are not reflective of abortion numbers in conservative states, LifeNews has continued to make these false claims year after year, with no apparent willingness to retract their misleading headlines and stories.

Several anti-abortion groups and leaders have urged LifeNews, both publicly and privately, to make more careful claims about the status of abortion in our country, especially in states that claim to have banned abortion. Those overtures have either been ignored or answered with blocks on social media.

LifeNews insists they have “developed a reputation for fairness, accuracy, and timeliness in our two decades of service.” That is completely false. If that were the case, they would be willing to receive correction, retract their false statements, and properly inform their readers in the future.

Their repeated misrepresentations of the abortion fight and blind insistence that laws passed by the Pro-Life establishment are successfully ending abortion are taking people out of the battle because they are led to believe the war has already been won.

Christians who love their preborn neighbors as themselves and want abortion to truly be abolished in their states should stop trusting LifeNews to keep them informed.

LifeNews has consistently chosen to broadcast false claims and misleading headlines. The truth is that the legalized murder of preborn babies is still occurring every single day in all fifty states. The laws written by Pro-Life lobbyists and politicians are allowing this, and thousands of preborn children are murdered each year inside states which LifeNews claims have zero abortions.

LifeNews should not be trusted until they retract their false reporting and start telling their readers the truth about abortion in our country.
