Representative Brent Money Files Bill to Abolish Abortion in Texas

AUSTIN, TX - Today, Representative Brent Money filed HB 2197, which would abolish abortion in Texas by providing equal protection to every preborn child in the womb.

Under current Texas abortion law, mothers are able to abort their children with absolute legal immunity through self-managed abortions. Money’s bill would repeal section 19.06 of the Texas penal code that gives mothers special murder rights over their preborn children.

Despite the implementation of the Human Life Protection Act in 2022, babies in Texas are still dying on a genocidal scale. In 2023 alone, over 56,000 Texas preborn babies were legally murdered as allowed by Texas Law. Of the 56,000, roughly 35,000 of those babies were murdered out of state,[1] while 20,662 mothers murdered their babies using abortion pills on Texas soil, protected by Texas law.[2]

When articulating the dire need for equal protection in Texas, Brent Money said,

“Today in Texas, a woman could appear on television, admit to killing her own child in utero, and hold the evidence of that action up for all to see, yet she has not broken any law. THAT is an injustice that the Texas House could and should address.”

Last legislative session, former House Speaker Dade Phelan assigned the equal protection bill to a House committee chaired by a Planned Parenthood champion, leftist Democrat Joe Moody, who killed the bill. This session, we are hopeful the bill will receive a fair hearing in a Republican-led committee.

Since last session, candidates who support the abolition of abortion defeated establishment-backed candidates across the state. This legislative session has the potential to be a turning point in the fight to end abortion in Texas.

Representative Brent Money is on the political front lines of the war against abortion. If you live in Texas, please contact your state legislators and ask them to co-author HB 2197.
