Rep. Lorissa Sweet Files Bill to Abolish Abortion in Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — This weekend, State Representative Lorissa Sweet filed HB 1334, which would abolish abortion in Indiana by establishing the equal protection of the laws for preborn children.
HB 1334 has already been co-authored by Representative Lindsay Patterson and more legislators are expected to add their names in the coming weeks.
Current Indiana law denies preborn children the equal protection of the laws by:
Allowing babies conceived in rape and incest to be aborted
Allowing self-managed abortions throughout all nine months of pregnancy
The meager protections under Indiana’s current abortion law are woefully insufficient. Not only is the law riddled with exceptions and shamefully light penalties for abortionists, but Indiana law gives mothers explicit legal permission to murder their own preborn children with absolute legal impunity. Indiana Code Ann. § 35-42-1-6.5(b) states, “the following sections of this chapter do not apply to a pregnant woman who terminates her own pregnancy or kills a fetus that she is carrying.”
Because of this, the abortion genocide continues in Indiana. In 2023, about 10,620 Indiana babies were aborted in clinics outside of Indiana,[1] with an additional estimated 2,547 babies killed on Indiana soil in self-managed abortions by mothers.[2] Therefore, in 2023, over 13,167 Indiana babies were murdered in abortion, representing a roughly 14% increase year over year from 2021.
Representative Sweet is on the political front lines of the fight against abortion. If you live in Indiana, please contact your state legislators and ask them to co-author HB 1334.
